The Indian Aussies exhibition began its official tour of India on December 1 in New Delhi.

The exhibition was officially launched by the Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr Peter Varghese in New Delhi.

Mr Varghese said, “Indian Aussies is a celebration of the more than 300,000 Australians of Indian origin and their successes.”

“The Indian community is one of our fastest growing communities and is growing in importance. You will find Indian Australians working in the police, public service, education, business, agriculture and media.” Mr Varghese said.

“We are proud that this exhibition can be viewed so publicly by passing traffic – I encourage all Delhi-ites to take a drive past the High Commission. The photographs are viewable day and night.”

Indian Aussies, is organised in collaboration with the Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) and will tour Indian cities over the next four months.

The opening has already generated a deal of very favourable publicity.

We’re very excited that the ‘Indian Aussies’ photographic exhibition will be launched in Melbourne in late September. Premier John Brumby will officially launch the exhibition, which will be mounted onto the walls of the CrossBar building at the top of Federation Square in Melbourne. With each photograph being larger than life-size, it will be very impactful! The date for the opening has not yet been finalised, but we believe it will be around the last week of September.

The launch of the exhibition in Delhi is being organised by the Australian High Commission and  will now launch in November to allow for the Commonwealth Games to run before the project unveiling. The High Commission plans to mount further exhibitions of the photographs across India, after the launch in Delhi.

So that we can maintain a more permanent presence  for ‘Indian Aussies’, we are building a website which will be located on the Victorian Multicultural Commission website, with the launch timed for late September. The site will feature the photographs and stories of those who have been kind enough to participate in this project. It  will also include some extended video interviews. We hope to be able to increase the number of video interviews over time, as they are able to provide a more detailed view of the lives and experiences of Indian Aussies in Australia.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this significant project. You have been generous with your time; you have welcomed us warmly into your homes and places of business; you have made the project a success. And a very big thank you to those of you who have sent us notes of support and congratulations.

We look forward to seeing you at Federation Square. And if you can’t make it to the exhibition, we will make sure that you get to see how it unfolded online.

The prints will be larger than life-size and have real impact in this format. We have produced some test prints at the full size 50”x76”(1200mm x 1940mm) and they look very good.

The exhibition is expected to be launched in New Delhi in early September, and will be on view during the Commonwealth Games.

Discussions are also in progress regarding a website which will enable the photographs and stories of Indian Aussies to go out to a worldwide audience.
